Isabel Amy
Medical Art

I am a Medical Artist and Scientific Illustrator with a background in Archaeology.

I am particularly interested in illustrated patient information design and how modern technology impacts how we consume healthcare information.

I am passionate about research and I am always looking for projects to improve all aspects of healthcare provision and education through visualization and artwork.

Projects

CYPMHTF Logo

The Children's and Young People's Mental Health Taskforce is part of Health and Social Care in Scotland. It is an independent taskforce that aims to improve mental health services for young people in Scotland.

I was given a brief to design a logo that was child friendly and not overly corporate looking.

The final design of the logo features brightly coloured rings representing the different facets of the taskforce and the blue of the Scottish flag for the writing.

The Big Brave webcomic

This work was developed from my thesis.

Big Brave is a website developed to prepare children and families for a hospital visit. It hosts podcasts in different languages in which children and parents hear the story of what will happen when they go to hospital for surgery or a procedure under general anaesthetic as a day patient.

project developed a visual story to compliment the podcast. All the artwork was created in Adobe Illustrator.

Hallux Valgus anatomy

This website shows the comparative anatomy of a normal foot and Hallux Valgus. The structure of the foot was created by individually surface scanning human bone, and reforming it in zBrush.

The muscles were then built onto the structures and a copy of the model was then deformed to represent valgus anatomy and checked by an orthopaedic surgeon for accuracy.

The website was built using HTML and CSS, and 3D models of the deformed and normal foot were embedded onto the page from Sketchfab.

Masters Thesis

For my MSc in Medical Art, I developed a web comic to guide children and their families through the journey of having a day procedure involving a general anaesthetic.

This project was overseen and created with Dr Grant Rodney and Dr Kate Arrow at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

The artwork was done using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Aftereffects and the website was written in HTML, CSS and JS.
